What is GEAR UP?
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs) is a six-year federally funded college awareness program that
works with Lowell Public School students and their parents. We
provide academic assistance in the form of tutoring, mentoring, parent
workshops, parent education classes, college and career awareness, and
after school enrichment programs. We also provide professional
development for teachers.
Who Do We Serve?
GEAR UP originally worked with 7th & 8th grade middle school students at the Robinson, Stoklosa, Rogers, Butler and Sullivan Middle Schools. We have followed this group of students to Lowell High School in 2007 as they entered their freshman year. GEAR UP Lowell will continue to support this cohort during sophomore year in 2008, junior year in 2009, and senior year in 2010. Our goal is to see many of our students accepted into a two or four year college or university.
Who Are Our Partners?
GEAR UP works in partnership with the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Middlesex Community College, Lowell Public Schools, and many community organizations such as the Revolving Museum, Boys and Girls Club, Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership, Lowell Telecommunications Corporation, and United Teen Equality Center. GEAR UP also works very closely with parents, businesses, and religious and non-profit groups to increase the likelihood of more children pursuing a post-secondary education.
